Because the barriers to the inward journey will keep you from His presence

Last week we talked about the four barriers to our relationship with Christ. Let’s review those quickly.

  1. Emptiness (Psalm 107:9)
  2. Shallowness (Psalm 42:7-8)
  3. Sin (Psalm 1:1-2)
  4. Hurriedness (Psalm 51:10-17)

God possesses supreme power and desires a love relationship with us. (SLIDE)The Psalms reveal God’s desire for this love relationship.  Let me give you four ways.

  1. Psalms 91-92 – God is above me. He watches over me.  Therefore, I can rejoice in Him.

Verses 1-2: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

Verses 7-8: A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only look with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked.

  1. Psalm 23 – God is before me. Therefore, I can trust Him.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil;  my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

  1. Psalm 27 – God is with me to give me courage. Therefore, I can risk everything for Him.

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh, my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall.

  1. Psalm 63 – God is around me to bless me.  Therefore, I should run to Him.

Verses 1-3: O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

So, I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. So, I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands.

  1. Psalm 139 – God is everywhere, and He knows me. Therefore, I can relax in Him.

Verses 1-4: O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.

God longs for this love relationship.  He wants us to walk in his ways and walk by his Spirit.  You say, “How can I enhance intimacy with God?”  I want to give you nine ways you can enhance this intimacy with God.

As Henry Blackaby says, “God is everywhere and we must seek to join Him in what He is already doing.

  1. Take responsibility to become intimate with him. Verse 1
